Plot:
The General is the movie based on the real life goings-on of
gangster Martin Cahill, who pulled off two daring robberies
in Ireland with his team, but attracted unwanted attention
from the police, the IRA, the UVF and members of his own
team. The movie follows ‘the general’ played by Brendan
Gleeson as he carries out his criminal activities. One of
Cahill’s famous robberies was in Russborough House,
Blessington, County Wicklow where he stole paintings worth
up to £30 million.
Locations:
The art robbery scene was filmed at Russborough House, and
as they drive off into the night they are seen burying the
paintings in the Sally Gap. Another famous incident was that
of Martin Cahill driving for hours around the Wicklow
Mountains in an effort to lose the Gardai that were
following him.
